Nightlife Safety Advocate
We’re looking for Nightlife Safety Advocates to work at our students’ union affiliated club nights and events to help support and signpost information to our student attendees.
This role will also contribute to our wider work on student safety and be expected to attend working groups and contribute their ideas on how the Students’ Union can support students effectively. The students’ union is committed to improving the safety and experience of students attending our nightlife events in the Brighton community.
A typical shift as a Nightlife Safety Advocate would start with meeting your team and gathering any resources you may need for the evening, this may be leaflets, emergency contact numbers, condoms or sanitary items, water and sweets! You’ll then arrive and set up at the venue (for example Pryzm) and meet your other colleagues for the night (such as the bar and management team, security and first aid).
Once you’re settled in the venue and know your way around, you’ll be there to welcome students as they enter and say hello. Students can then come up to you if they need any support, or you might be called to sit with a student who may be receiving help from the night club team.
You’ll be a friendly face and able to give some signposting information to other services they can access. You may have to safely gather their details and pass it on to a staff member from the students’ union so they can check in on them tomorrow.
One of the most important parts of the night will be your shift sheet- a way for us to review all the support you gave across the evening and if there are any outstanding issues. You’ll then get a well deserved free taxi home and rest up after a late night!
This role would suit anyone who is passionate about advocacy, supporting other students or interested in working in a wellbeing environment. We will provide all the key training you need and you will not be expected to work alone.
Content WARNING: At times this role may involve having difficult one on one conversations with students in which they may disclose sensitive topics such as sexual assault, mental health and domestic violence, as well as students who may appear intoxicated and visibly unwell.

STAFF BENEFITS

GETTING PAID
Everyone working in the UK needs a National Insurance number in order to get paid. If you are a UK citizen you will automatically have this, however if you are an international student you might want to apply for an NI number at the same time as you apply for a job so there is no delay in your payments. You can do so using this link: https://www.gov.uk/apply-national-insurance-number. Please note you cannot apply for a National Insurance Number until you're in the UK, but this should not stop you from completing your application for this role. If you need support in applying for a National Insurance Number you may find that Sussex University's International Support Team can help: https://www.sussex.ac.uk/study/international-students/international-student-support
INTERNATIONAL APPLICANTS
We really welcome applications from abroad for all of our vacancies.
Due to legal regulations we have to ensure that everyone is eligible to work in the UK and this would be done by us checking and making a copy of the correct original identification/documentation before your first day of work. You may also be limited in the number of hours you would be allowed to work.
Find out more information about applying to work in the UK.
In any case, we would encourage anyone to apply for a job in one of our friendly departments to give yourself the chance of being selected, and we would look to see the appropriate original documents before your first day of work
