Deputy Retail Manager
Interested in a career in a busy retail environment? The Students’ Union Trading Company is looking for a Deputy Manager to join our friendly Retail team. Working collaboratively with the management team, you will be responsible for supporting the day-to-day running of our Southern Co-operative store and the Union Shop. This is a varied role which requires a dedicated and hard-working individual. Your role will include opening and closing the shops, managing inventory, training and coaching student staff and helping to deliver the aims and goals of the Students’ Union. You’ll have the opportunity to shape the role in a lot of ways.
Why is working for the Students’ Union different?
We run retail for students. For our customers this means providing an affordable service and product range tailored to their needs. For our staff this means providing a rota that ensures they never miss a lecture or a seminar, and having supportive management that understands the pressures of University life.
We have one shop that we own, and a franchise store which we run with the Southern Co-operative (the busiest Co-op store in the south east!) Through working with students and our partners, we are constantly evolving and finding ways to run our business more ethically. In the last few years we were responsible for removing automatic card receipts from Co-op stores, saving thousands of trees!
We are really committed to maintaining a diverse workforce because we know how important it is to have decision makers and collaborators with varied lived experiences and backgrounds that reflect the range of needs from our diverse student community.
We welcome applications from everyone, and we want to strongly encourage applications from; people with an ethnic minority or Chinese background, people with a disability, people with dependents, and people who identify as LGBTQ+. We conduct anonymous shortlisting and all of our interview panels have Unconscious Bias Training in order to support the above. If you have any suggestions as to how we could improve our language or application process please let us know.
As a representative body one of our key aims is to increase applicants that identify as Black, Asian or a minority ethnic to work in the Students' Union. To support this we will ask you an optional question about your ethnic origin. Not providing this information will not adversely affect your application for the role. This information will be hidden during the application process. Staff that identify as Black, Asian or minority ethnic are also welcome and supported to join our BAME Staff Network.
